Linking your Aadhaar card with your PAN card is mandatory under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act to keep your PAN active for filing returns, opening bank accounts, or high-value transactions. - The last date to link Aadhaar with PAN is 31 December 2025 for individuals who obtained PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID before 1 October 2024.

There are two ways to check if your Aadhaar and PAN card is linked, which are as follows:
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Enter the ‘PAN number’ and ‘Aadhaar Number’ and click the ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ button.
Step 1: Login into the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Go to ‘Dashboard’ on the homepage and click the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.
Step 3: You can also go to ‘My Profile’ and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.
Step 1: Write the following SMS: UIDPAN <12 digit Aadhaar number> < 10 digit PAN number>
Step 2: Send the SMS to ‘567678’ or ‘56161’.
Step 3: Wait for the response from the government service.
If you have obtained your PAN card before 1st October 2024 on the basis on Aadhaar enrolment ID, you can link your PAN-Aadhaar within 31st December 2025 for free.

Below are the steps to link your Aadhaar with your PAN in brief:
Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Enter the ‘PAN Number’ and ‘Aadhaar Number’ and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 3: Click on ‘Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax’ button.
Step 4: Enter PAN, mobile number and click ‘Continue’ button.
Step 5: Click ‘Proceed’ button under the ‘Income Tax’ tab.
Step 6: Pay the challan amount and click ‘Continue’.
Step 7: Under the ‘Quick Links’ heading, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’.
Step 8: Enter the PAN and Aadhaar and click the ‘Validate’ button.
Step 9: Enter the Aadhaar number, mobile number, OTP and click ‘Validate’
The request for Aadhaar-PAN linking will be sent to the UIDAI for validation. You can also visit a PAN card centre and submit the Aadhaar-PAN card linking request form for linking the two cards.
Once the PAN-Aadhaar linking request is sent, your PAN can will become operative within 7-30 days.
According to Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, taxpayers with a PAN card should link it to their Aadhaar cards. Thus, all taxpayers must mandatorily link their PAN with their Aadhaar cards by paying the penalty of Rs.1,000 else their PAN cards will become inoperative.
However, the following need not link their Aadhaar with PAN cards since they come under the exempt category:

The request to link PAN-Aadhaar will be sent to the UIDAI. However, the reactivation process will take around 30 days from the submission date of the request to link the Aadhaar-PAN and make the PAN card operational again.
